Software updates

Checking for, downloading and installing a new version on a computer installed from a direct download.

In SideClick: Settings → Software updates

Software updates is on a computer installed from a direct download. A computer from the Mac App Store or the Microsoft Store has no such screen: the store delivers its updates, and the menu does not show it. Phones and browsers update their own way.

Every installation can take every release, whatever its seat. The status card says whether you are on the latest version, whether a newer version is available — with its release notes — or that automatic updates are not configured for this installation. Check for updates asks again at any time; the app also checks when it starts, and a banner says when an update is ready.

Downloading and installing need an administrator. Download update fetches the release and shows its progress; the download is verified before it can be installed. Restart & install installs it and restarts the app, so save your work first: while any editor holds unsaved clinical work the button is held back and the screen says so. Someone who is not an administrator sees that an administrator can install the update from their account.

Update channel URL, for an administrator, is where this installation looks for releases — the address of a published releases file. Leave it blank to use the address built into the app; Save channel keeps it and checks again against the new address.
