The lock screen and the sign-in screen take your password only when the gate allows it. The first 4 attempts are free. After that each wrong password brings a wait before the next try: 1 minute, then 5 minutes, then 15 minutes, and from then on 1 hour before every attempt. The screen counts the wait down — Wait so many seconds before trying again — and the password field opens again by itself.
Only a password the app refused counts. A locked account, a connection that failed or a screen that could not open is said but never counted. A right password clears the count.
Closing and reopening the app changes nothing: the wait stands across a restart.
Nothing is ever erased for wrong passwords, however many. An erase could destroy entries not yet sent to the sync server and would let anyone at the keyboard wipe your computer by typing wrong passwords — and your records are sealed under the password anyway. If you have forgotten it, Forgot your password? and your recovery code set a new one.
On a phone the password is checked on the phone itself, no signal needed, inside the same gate; a cancelled fingerprint or face is not counted. In the browser the password is checked in the browser itself, inside the same gate.
