Backups, exports and restore

The sealed copy on the sync server rebuilds any device after sign-in; an export to a file is your own offline copy, and a restore brings a computer back from one.

Every entry you write goes to the sync server sealed the moment it is written. There is no backup to run and no snapshot to upload: any device of yours can be rebuilt from the server by signing in. The line at the foot of the screen says All records on the server, or how many entries are still waiting to send.

Settings → Backup & Recovery is for a copy in your own keeping. Export everything writes one file — a sealed archive of the database, attachments and keys, locked with a passphrase you choose — plus a readable file of notes for each patient with consent on record. Keep the passphrase separately: it cannot be recovered, and without it the archive opens for nobody.

Automatic backups write the same archive on a schedule, daily or weekly, to the app's own folder, keeping only the newest few. A banner warns when no backup has been made for too long.

Restore is on the sign-in screen of a new or wiped computer: choose Restore from backup, pick the archive, type its passphrase and set a password for this computer. Your authenticator app stays as it is, because it belongs to your account on the sync server, not to the computer. Sign in to your account afterwards and the computer takes its place among your devices.

An export is a copy, not a substitute for the server: it holds what the computer held on the day. The server copy is live, and it is deleted only by a keeper's Delete or under the lapse rule.
