When you go on leave, arrange cover under Settings → Practice and people, from your computer. You name a colleague of your profession at the same practice — a practice owner or an associate — and a date from and a date until. The end date is set up front, and the cover must start before it ends.
The cover holds the patients you treat on the day it is given, and nothing joins it later: a patient who arrives during your leave is booked with the covering clinician, who opens the file as its treating clinician. Your colleague sees the three layers of those records — details, money and clinical entries — and writes their own notes in them until the cover ends. Their notes on your patients reach you too.
A cover stays inside the practice. A clinician from outside covers by being invited as a member until a date; a cover is never given across practices, and the colleague who holds one never passes it on. Only the clinician who treats the patients, or a practice owner, can arrange cover.
Each open cover is listed on Practice and people and on the patient's Who can see this record, with End for the clinician who gave it, the colleague who holds it, or a practice owner.
On the end date the cover ends on every device, with or without a connection. What the covering clinician was lent is destroyed on their devices — the keys and the entries — down to the notes they wrote themselves, which stay with the patient's record so they have a name. Your own entries and the practice's file are never touched by it.
