An invitation may carry the date the membership ends — a locum covering a leave, or anyone whose work ends on a known day — and a practice owner can set or clear the date later on People, as Member until. On that date the membership ends by itself, exactly as a removal: on the sync server by the hour, and on the person's own devices with or without a connection. This is how a clinician from outside the practice covers a leave.
Leaving, a removal and an end date all mean the same. The person's access ends, the keys they held are replaced in the background, and the practice keeps everything: each patient's file stays, with the leaver's entries in it, frozen.
What the leaver takes depends on the practice's setting, Members keep their own copy, shown on the invitation. On, a clinician who leaves keeps a copy: every entry they wrote, and the details, bookings and invoices of the patients they treated — not other clinicians' entries on the same patients. Off, the practice keeps the records and they take nothing. An assistant, the front desk and a bookkeeper never take a copy.
The leaver's copy is theirs, read-only, kept under their own retention period. Once they have a practice of their own it is placed there as history and they add new entries after it; its patients show Not yet seen here until their first booking. After the departure the two copies are independent.
Unsigned notes left behind freeze as drafts that nobody else can sign. The practice owner sees People who left, to assign each of the leaver's patients and sort out their bookings.
A rehire is an ordinary invitation: nothing merges, and nothing is shown again by itself.

- Cover while you're awayA colleague of your profession in your practice sees and writes in your patients' records from a date until a date; when the cover ends, what they borrowed is destroyed and their own notes stay.
